THE GUARDIANS, A novel by John Grisham
This is an engaging story of the tenacious efforts of a small team of volunteer investigators seeking to exonerate a man they believe has been wrongly convicted. The plot is based upon the false conviction of an actual Texas inmate, Joe Bryan, who some thirty years ago was found guilty of murdering his wife.
THE GUARDIANS is a story set in a small Florida town that at one point extends to a mysteriously horrendous hide-away somewhere in Belize. Initially, the story demands the reader’s concentration to sort out the numerous characters and character references. But the dedication of the main character, Cullen Post, a lawyer who is also an Episcopal minister and very likeable guy, to free from a life sentence a man he is convinced is innocent had me cheering for him every step of the way. Somewhere around the center of the book I found the intrigue captivating, and I certainly wanted to know how it was all going to end. Although I was somewhat put off by Grisham’s first-person present narrative, it helps move the story along. If you are a Grisham book worm, you’ve most likely read this one. If not a fan, THE GUARDIANS might be a good place to start.
