After months of debate, the LBJ East project (all $1.6 billion) was approved by the Texas Transportation Commission in May. TxDOT will begin requesting bids the nearly 11 mile project of for 635 between Central Expressway and I-30. Planners estimate a contract will be awarded in summer 2019 with construction to finish in 2024. Planned enhancements include an additional free lane in each direction, improved interchange at I-30, and continuous frontage roads. Continuous frontage roads will replace the fragmented access roads that will reduce confusion for drivers but also create viable business developments along 635.
Notable improvements impacting our neighborhood includes a signature bridge at Skillman Street & 635 which some have referred to as a “gateway to Lake Highlands”, straightening out the complex Audelia/Skillman interchange, and sound-dampening walls.
Elected representatives and planning officials praised many local Lake Highlands residents who took an active role as part of the LBJ Now movement to push the project forward. See a video of the TxDOT vision of the LBJ East project here and read more comprehensively the progression of this project.
